About University of Sunderland

The University of Sunderland School of Medicine is one of England's newest medical schools, accepting its first cohort in 2019 as part of the UK Government's expansion of medical school places. The five-year MBBS programme trains students at Sunderland Royal Hospital, South Tyneside District Hospital, and community placements across the northeast. The school was specifically established to address health inequalities in the northeast — one of England's most deprived regions with significant health challenges including cardiovascular disease, mental health, and substance misuse.

The curriculum integrates social determinants of health throughout, preparing graduates to serve communities with the greatest need. Sunderland offers very affordable living, friendly community, and proximity to Newcastle's cultural offerings. For UK students passionate about health equity and serving underserved communities, Sunderland offers a mission-driven medical school explicitly designed to produce doctors for areas of greatest need, with strong widening participation commitments.
