Overview: Medical Education in New Zealand

New Zealand is a wonderfully peaceful, English-speaking country with two excellent medical schools — the University of Auckland Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, and the University of Otago Dunedin School of Medicine. Both are internationally respected, GMC-eligible, and offer high-quality 6-year medical programmes.

For UK students, New Zealand is an appealing destination for those wanting English-medium education in a safe, welcoming, and culturally familiar environment. New Zealand society and culture have many similarities to the UK, making the transition relatively smooth.

The New Zealand health system (Te Whatu Ora) is a universal publicly funded system closely modelled on NHS principles. Clinical training in New Zealand hospitals provides an excellent preparation for eventual NHS practice.

Costs are significant but lower than Australia — tuition is £25,000–£38,000/year and living costs in Auckland or Dunedin are £1,200–£1,800/month. UCAT-ANZ is required for undergraduate entry at Auckland. Both institutions accept direct applications from UK school leavers with strong A-levels. Medicine Clearing can guide you through NZ admissions from the UK.

Entry Requirements for UK Students
