About Umeå University

Umeå University in northern Sweden offers a medical programme shaped by the unique challenges of Arctic and rural healthcare. The 5.5-year programme trains students at Norrlands University Hospital (NUS) — northern Sweden's only university hospital and the tertiary referral centre for Sweden's vast, sparsely populated northern half. This creates unique competencies in telemedicine, remote consultation, emergency transport medicine, and Sami Indigenous health.

Umeå's research strengths include epidemiology (the Swedish National Rural Health Research Centre), infectious disease, and ageing — the university has access to unique northern Swedish population cohorts. The campus is one of Sweden's most modern, with the Umeå Institute of Design and the Bildmuseet art gallery creating a creative atmosphere. Umeå is a vibrant student city (35,000 students in a city of 130,000) with northern lights, midnight sun, and excellent cross-country skiing.

For UK students, Umeå offers unique Arctic medicine experience at zero tuition, though the programme is taught in Swedish.
