About UiT The Arctic University
UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø is the world's northernmost university and offers a unique medical programme shaped by Arctic health challenges, remote medicine, and telemedicine. The six-year Cand.med. programme trains students at the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN) — the northernmost university hospital in the world (600+ beds), serving northern Norway's dispersed population across vast Arctic distances.
This creates unique competencies in emergency medicine, telemedicine, pre-hospital care, and Sami Indigenous health. UiT pioneered telemedicine in the 1990s and its Norwegian Centre for E-health Research leads global development of digital health solutions for remote populations. Research also excels in Arctic medicine, marine biomedicine, cold physiology, and circumpolar health epidemiology.
Tromsø offers the Northern Lights, midnight sun, Arctic wilderness, and a surprisingly vibrant cultural scene for a city of 77,000. For UK students, while the programme is in Norwegian, UiT represents a genuinely unique medical education — zero tuition, Arctic medicine expertise, telemedicine leadership, and one of the world's most extraordinary natural environments.
