About Hull York Medical School
Hull York Medical School (HYMS) is a partnership between the University of Hull and the University of York, founded in 2003. The five-year MBBS programme trains students at hospitals across a wide geographic area — Castle Hill Hospital and Hull Royal Infirmary in Hull, York Hospital, and Scarborough Hospital — giving students extensive experience across both urban and semi-rural settings. HYMS's curriculum emphasises early and prolonged clinical exposure, with community placements from year one and significant time in primary care.
Research strengths include cardiovascular medicine, health sciences (York's Department of Health Sciences is nationally leading in clinical trials methodology), and mental health. The York campus provides access to one of England's most beautiful historic cities, while Hull offers waterfront regeneration and cultural resurgence (UK City of Culture 2017). For UK students, HYMS offers a supportive medical school with strong community focus, two very different city experiences, and excellent teaching quality ratings.
